Subtitling Audiences Network


Ongoing | The Subtitling Audiences Network brings together researchers and media and translation industry professionals together to provide clear, evidence-based insights into what audiences truly need and want from subtitles.


Subtitling 3.0


Ongoing | This project challenges the assumption that subtitling verbal elements (dialogue, signs, etc) is always enough to make audiovisual content accessible.


Subtitling Clear Shadows: an action research project on enhanced subtitling


Ongoing | This action research project, co-developed with the film director Fernando Vendrell, focuses on developing the concept and practice of Enhanced Subtitling, in which subtitling goes beyond subtitling dialogue.


From Lab to Screen


2025 | This project explored avenues to translate reception research for non-academic stakeholders in ways that impact industry subtitling practice.


UK Subtitling Audiences Network


2024-2025 | This AHRC-funded Network brought together subtitling and film industry professionals to address key questions and develop innovative methods for audience-focused research.


Subtitling Dialects


2006-2017 | This project focused on identifying the most typical translation strategies and techniques used to translate dialects in English-Portuguese Translation. It has also developed a framework for multimodal corpora analysis of this phenomenon
